Alrightreads: Comixxxxxxxxx

Dan Abnett, Ian Edginton and artists, Star Trek: Early Voyages

1997-98 / Ecomics / 436 pages

****

A bit too action-packed to be a faithful realisation of what Star Trek's original incarnation as Forbidden Planet: The Series might have looked like, but still a fitting tribute to that teasingly captivating era and easily the most consistently high-quality 'Trek comic line of the 20th century, not that the bar was very high.

Patrick Horvath, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees

2024 / Ecomics / 152 pages

Run-of-the-mill serial killer porn with a sub-Grandville anthropomorphic gimmick. Still read it though, didn't I?

Walter Simonson, The Mighty Thor, Vol. 1

1983-84 (collected 2013) / Ecomics / 232 pages

****

Peak ludicrous primary-coloured mythological action sci-fi before the Brits invaded and made comics too self-conscious to be fun. This is like the best 80s cartoon never made.

Viz, Viz: The Fish Supper

1992 / Ebook / 128 pages

An annual round-up is about the right frequency for these, but even then it wears thin. The random one-offs continue to be the funniest.

Faves: Topless Skateboard Nun, Tinribs, Herman's Hermit

Jeremy Sorese and Coleman Engle, Steven Universe, Vol. 1

2014 (collected 2015) / Ecomics / 128 pages

Authentic to the series and similarly fun, if lacking the special audio-visual ambience.
